Kasatkina Advances in Adelaide as Vekic Suffers Third Straight Defeat

World No. 9 Daria Kasatkina cruised into the second round of the Adelaide International on Monday, while Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic suffered her third consecutive defeat this season. Kasatkina, who has been a runner-up at the Australian Open warm-up event twice, secured a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Australia's Olivia Gadecki by breaking her serve five times.

 

Reflecting on her strong start to the season, Kasatkina expressed her happiness to return to Adelaide, a tournament she has played frequently. She highlighted her strategy to stay aggressive and utilize her footwork to dominate the match.

 

Kasatkina, seeded third, adjusted quickly to the Memorial Drive center court despite a series of early service breaks. She now prepares to face wildcard Emerson Jones, last year's junior runner-up at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, who defeated China's Wang Xinyu 6-4, 6-0.

 

 Meanwhile, Croatia's Donna Vekic continued her disappointing start to the year with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva. Vekic, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2023, also failed to win her group matches at the United Cup in Perth, raising concerns about her form ahead of the Australian Open.

 

Putintseva, advancing to the second round, expressed satisfaction with her focused performance against a familiar opponent. She will next face either fourth seed Danielle Collins or Tunisian wildcard Ons Jabeur, a three-time Grand Slam finalist.

 

 Elsewhere, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, in a three-set battle, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. As the season gains momentum, all eyes now turn to the year's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Sunday.
