Kaitlin Quevedo Wins First WTA Title After Comeback Victory in São Paulo

Posted : 22 September 2026

Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo claimed the first WTA title of her career after recovering from a set down to defeat Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the São Paulo final.

The 20-year-old prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a final that was postponed by heavy rain and completed on Monday. The victory came in only Quevedo’s eighth WTA main-draw appearance since making her tour-level debut in Auckland in January.

Quevedo, the seventh seed, struggled early as Podoroska established a 3-0 advantage in the opening set. The Argentine, who was also playing in her first WTA singles final, maintained her lead to take the opening set 6-4.

The Spaniard responded strongly in the second set. After the pair exchanged early breaks, Quevedo secured another break in the 10th game to level the match and force a deciding set.

Quevedo then took control of the final set, winning the first five games to move within touching distance of the title. Podoroska briefly reduced the deficit, but Quevedo held her nerve and converted her second championship point to complete the comeback in two hours and eight minutes.

The triumph caps an impressive first season on the WTA Tour for Quevedo. She made her Grand Slam main-draw debut at Roland Garros, where she recorded her first major victory, and later reached a WTA 125 final before breaking into the world’s top 100.

The title also lifted Quevedo to a career-high ranking, with the 20-year-old entering the tournament ranked outside the top 100. She becomes one of the first-time WTA champions of the 2026 season.

For Podoroska, the defeat ended a notable run in São Paulo. The 29-year-old reached her first WTA singles final after returning from a lengthy injury absence and also climbed back toward the top 200 in the rankings.
