Juan Martin del Potro Bids Emotional Farewell to Tennis

Posted : 02 December 2024

Juan Martin del Potro, the former US Open champion, bid an emotional farewell to tennis during an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 36-year-old, who won his only Grand Slam title in 2009, has struggled with injuries throughout his career, with a knee fracture in 2019 causing ongoing pain.

He played his last tournament in 2022 but participated in 'The Last Challenge' against his long-time friend and rival, Djokovic. The match, watched by around 15,000 fans, saw Del Potro triumph 6-4, 7-5, with the Argentine visibly emotional throughout.

During the match, Del Potro fought back tears, especially in the emotional moments following his win. After the final point, he shared a heartfelt hug with Djokovic, before placing his signature bandana on the net as a symbol of his farewell.

Djokovic praised Del Potro, saying, "Juan Martin is an example for all of us, and his greatest victory in life is being a wonderful person." The event also featured a tribute video from tennis legends such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Gael Monfils.

Del Potro's career was marked by numerous accomplishments, including a memorable 2009 US Open victory over five-time champion Federer. He also earned Olympic medals, winning bronze in 2012 and silver in 2016, and claimed 22 ATP singles titles.

However, his career was plagued by wrist injuries and later, a devastating knee injury in 2019 that led to chronic pain. Despite these setbacks, Del Potro reached world number three and maintained a strong fan base with his powerful forehand and resilience.

In an emotional Instagram video released prior to the exhibition, Del Potro opened up about the toll his injuries have taken on his life. "My daily life isn't what I would like it to be. It's very tough," he shared, revealing the constant pain he endures.

The knee injury, which he sustained in 2019, has prevented him from climbing stairs or even driving without discomfort. Del Potro's farewell marks the end of a storied career, where his spirit and determination won the hearts of fans worldwide.
