Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca has decided to sit out the upcoming Asian swing as he takes time to recover physically and mentally following a difficult 2026 season.
The 20-year-old world No. 28 announced the decision on Monday, saying a series of injuries had prevented him from competing consistently and performing at the level he wanted. After discussions with his team, Fonseca said they agreed that taking a break was the right course of action.
Fonseca recently returned to competitive action for Brazil in the Davis Cup after missing the US Open because of an abdominal problem. He defeated Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Rio de Janeiro as Brazil secured a 3-1 victory in the tie.
Despite making the effort to return for his country, Fonseca acknowledged that he still needed additional recovery time. He said the decision to step away was frustrating but necessary after a season affected by repeated physical problems.
The Brazilian will miss the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo from September 30 to October 6 and the Shanghai Masters, scheduled for the following fortnight. He has not announced a specific date for his return to the ATP Tour.
Fonseca has dealt with recurring back problems this season, which contributed to his early Australian Open exit. More recently, an abdominal injury kept him out of the US Open before he returned for the Davis Cup.
Despite the interruptions, Fonseca produced some of the biggest results of his young career in 2026. He defeated Novak Djokovic in the third round of the French Open before reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final, while he also advanced to the third round at Wimbledon.
Fonseca’s decision gives him an opportunity to step away from competition and focus on regaining full fitness before returning to the tour.
