Jessica Pegula Sets Up Third Straight US Open Semifinal Against Aryna Sabalenka

Jessica Pegula battled past compatriot Emma Navarro in a tense quarterfinal at the US Open, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semifinals for another showdown with Aryna Sabalenka.

The third-seeded American needed two hours and 20 minutes to overcome Navarro in a physical contest on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Pegula recovered from an early break in the deciding set before eventually securing her place in the last four.

The victory sets up a third consecutive US Open meeting with Sabalenka. The Belarusian defeated Pegula in the 2024 final before overcoming her again in last year's semifinals on her way to successfully defending the title.

Pegula admitted the match against Navarro was demanding, particularly in the humid conditions, with nine breaks of serve highlighting the closely fought nature of the contest. She also acknowledged that she struggled with her serve and had to battle through a difficult mental challenge.

The result improved Pegula's record against Navarro to 5-0. Navarro, a former world No. 8, has enjoyed a strong return to form after taking an extended break to focus on her health and claimed her first title in more than a year in Strasbourg in May.

Pegula has already captured two titles this season and arrived in New York among the players still capable of challenging Sabalenka for the world No. 1 ranking.

However, the rankings battle could be settled before the American faces Sabalenka. Second-ranked Elena Rybakina can take over the top spot outright if she defeats Zheng Qinwen in Wednesday's quarterfinal.

Pegula will now turn her attention to Sabalenka and another opportunity to reach the US Open final, where she will hope to reverse the result of their previous encounters in New York.
