World No. 4 Jessica Pegula has revealed why she prefers not to stay in the official player hotel during Wimbledon, saying the decision helps her maintain her mental freshness throughout the tournament.
Pegula, one of the leading contenders for this year's Wimbledon title, believes spending too much time around fellow competitors outside the court can become mentally exhausting. Instead, she chooses independent accommodation where she can unwind away from the constant tournament environment.
The American, whose parents own several major sports franchises including the Buffalo Bills, has established herself as one of the WTA Tour's top players with 11 singles and seven doubles titles. Although she is still chasing her first Grand Slam singles title, she reached the final of the US Open in 2024 and advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2023.
Speaking about her tournament routine, Pegula explained that comfortable accommodation has become increasingly important as she has progressed through her career.
She said that when she was younger, hotel standards mattered less because she was focused on gaining experience. However, with more years on the professional tour, she now values a comfortable room and a better environment to recover between matches.
Pegula also said her decision to avoid the official player hotel is largely driven by the need for personal space. According to the 32-year-old, professional players already spend most of their day together on practice courts, in the gym, treatment rooms and locker rooms.
She believes remaining in the same hotel after training only adds to the mental demands of life on tour.
Pegula explained that constantly seeing the same rivals throughout the day can become overwhelming, especially since players compete against each other almost every week. Having separate accommodation allows her to disconnect from the competitive atmosphere and focus on recovery.
The same approach was used during both the French Open and Wimbledon last season. Despite altering her preparations, Pegula suffered a surprise first-round defeat to Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the All England Club.
This year, however, she heads into Wimbledon with renewed confidence after reaching the final of the Berlin Open, one of the key grass-court tournaments leading into the Grand Slam.
Pegula will once again hope her off-court routine contributes to a deeper run at Wimbledon as she continues her pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam singles crown.
