World number five Jessica Pegula has sparked controversy after being overheard criticising French Open champion Mirra Andreeva during a practice session ahead of the 2026 WTA Finals in Indian Wells. The American described the Russian teenager as a “diva” who needed to be humbled, while also questioning the approach of her coach, Conchita Martinez.
Pegula's remarks were captured by a courtside microphone while she was speaking privately with her coach, Mark Knowles, after a training session on Wednesday. The practice was being streamed live by the Women's Tennis Association, meaning the conversation was picked up and subsequently circulated widely on social media.
During the exchange, the 32-year-old expressed disappointment with what she perceived as Andreeva's attitude towards Martinez. Although she acknowledged that the Spanish coach had always treated her well, Pegula said the situation had affected her opinion of how Martinez manages the young player's behaviour.
Pegula suggested that Andreeva needed someone willing to challenge her attitude and prevent her from behaving disrespectfully towards her coach. She also questioned why the teenager appeared frustrated during a practice situation in which she was comfortably leading 4-0.
Despite her criticism, Pegula was generous in her assessment of Andreeva's tennis abilities. She praised the Russian's serve, movement, intelligence and anticipation, describing her as an exceptionally talented player with considerable potential.
The American also compared Andreeva's mentality with that of fellow American Coco Gauff. Pegula suggested that if the Russian developed a mindset similar to Gauff's, she could become an even stronger player, highlighting the difference between Andreeva's technical qualities and her temperament.
Following the circulation of the recording, the WTA removed the practice-session livestreams from its YouTube channel. Pegula's representatives and the governing body were approached for comment, while Andreeva had not publicly responded to the remarks at the time of reporting.
The controversy has added an unexpected talking point ahead of the season-ending WTA Finals, which begin at Indian Wells on November 8 and run until November 15. Pegula and Andreeva are in separate groups, meaning they could only meet if both progress to the knockout stages.
