Jessica Pegula Stuns Aryna Sabalenka to Reach Berlin WTA Final

Posted : 20 June 2026

Jessica Pegula produced a strong comeback performance to defeat world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0 and book her place in the final of the WTA Berlin grass-court tournament for the second time in her career.

The American world No 4 is now one win away from claiming her 12th WTA title and a second crown in Berlin, where she previously triumphed in 2024. She will face either Czech rising star Linda Noskova or Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala in the final.

Sabalenka had dominated their previous head-to-head record, winning nine of their 12 meetings, though this was their first encounter on grass. Pegula, however, made a fast start and immediately put pressure on the top seed by exploiting errors from Sabalenka’s forehand.

She broke early to take control of the opening set and maintained her advantage with steady serving and consistent baseline play, wrapping up the set 6-2 in convincing fashion.

Sabalenka responded in the second set by securing an early break, but she struggled to maintain control as Pegula pushed her throughout a tense battle. The set eventually went to a tiebreak, which was disrupted by rain while Pegula led 3-1 on Sabalenka’s serve.

After a delay of around two and a half hours, play resumed, and Sabalenka managed to edge the tiebreak to level the match and force a deciding set.

In the final set, Pegula regained complete control, dominating from the outset and not allowing Sabalenka a single game as she closed out a commanding 6-0 finish after two hours and 13 minutes on court.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Alexandra Eala continued her breakthrough run by defeating higher-ranked opponents, including Elena Rybakina and Donna Vekic, to reach the semifinals. The 21-year-old, currently ranked world No 35, is also making history as the first player from the Philippines to break into the top 50.

She will now aim to continue her impressive form against eighth seed Linda Noskova for a place in the final.
