Jessica Pegula and Naomi Osaka Advance to Washington Open Semi-finals

Top seed Jessica Pegula and third seed Naomi Osaka secured places in the semi-finals of the WTA Washington Open after producing contrasting victories in their quarter-final matches. Pegula continued her consistent season with a straight-sets triumph, while Osaka battled back from a set down to keep her title hopes alive.

World number three Pegula defeated Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 7-5 to reach her sixth WTA semi-final of the 2026 season. The American, who captured her first WTA title in Washington in 2019, delivered another composed display, using precise shot placement and strong serving to overcome the world number 20 in straight sets.

After the match, Pegula credited her improved confidence and tactical approach for her recent success. She explained that she has focused on targeting different areas of the court throughout the season, a strategy that proved effective against Kalinskaya in a closely contested encounter.

Osaka, meanwhile, showed resilience to defeat Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match lasting just over two hours. The four-time Grand Slam champion struggled for rhythm in the opening set but gradually found her range, raising her intensity to complete an impressive comeback and reach her first semi-final of the season.

Reflecting on her performance, Osaka admitted she lacked energy early in the contest and found it difficult to motivate herself. However, she said her mindset changed in the second set, deciding to give everything she had despite not feeling at her best, and that determination helped her turn the match around.

With both players progressing, Washington will now feature two of the tournament's biggest names in the final four. Pegula continues her pursuit of another title on home soil, while Osaka's comeback victory provides further evidence that she is rediscovering the form that made her one of the WTA Tour's most successful players.
