Jessica Pegula Admits Aryna Sabalenka Had Too Much Power in US Open Defeat

Jessica Pegula conceded that she had few answers for Aryna Sabalenka after the defending champion ended her US Open campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 semifinal victory on Thursday. Sabalenka advanced to a fourth consecutive US Open final, maintaining her pursuit of a third straight title at Flushing Meadows.

The defeat was particularly frustrating for Pegula because Sabalenka has now stopped her at the US Open in three consecutive years. The Belarusian defeated her in the 2024 final before eliminating her in last year's semifinals, and once again proved too strong when the pair met in New York.

Pegula admitted that Sabalenka's combination of power and precision created a difficult matchup, particularly when the world No. 1 was able to dictate exchanges from the baseline. The American felt she played a solid match but lacked the ability to escape pressure through her serve or athleticism in the way some of Sabalenka's other top rivals can.

Despite the one-sided finish, Pegula praised Sabalenka's performance and suggested that the level she produced would have been enough to defeat almost anyone on the day. Sabalenka struck 29 winners and seven aces while giving Pegula very few opportunities to gain control.

The result also continued a remarkable run of dominance for Sabalenka in New York. She has now won 19 consecutive matches at the US Open and will play Elena Rybakina in Saturday's final. A victory would make her the first woman since Serena Williams to win three straight US Open singles titles.

For Pegula, the defeat ends another strong Grand Slam campaign but leaves her still searching for a first major title. She plans to shift her focus to the remaining tournaments of the season, with the year-end rankings and qualification for the WTA Finals among her targets.

Rybakina's victory over Coco Gauff means the Kazakh will take over the world No. 1 ranking on Monday, ending Sabalenka's 99-week run at the top regardless of Saturday's final result.
