Britain’s Katie Boulter saw her impressive run come to an end in the quarter-finals of the Merida Open, as top seed Jasmine Paolini produced a stirring comeback to advance to the semi-finals.
Competing in Mexico against the world number seven, Boulter made a blistering start. She stormed through the opening set in just 28 minutes, delivering a flawless display without conceding a single game. Paolini struggled badly on serve in that set, winning only three service points as Boulter dictated play with aggressive, clean hitting.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second set. Paolini steadied herself, securing her first service hold before breaking to move 3-1 ahead. Although Boulter, who entered the match riding a seven-match winning streak that included lifting the Ostrava Open title, responded with an immediate break to love, consistency eluded both players. A sequence of service breaks followed, but it was the Italian who maintained composure at key moments to level the match.
Paolini, a finalist at both the Wimbledon Championships and the French Open in 2024, carried that renewed belief into the deciding set. She quickly moved 2-0 ahead, asserting greater control from the baseline. Boulter briefly reignited her hopes by breaking back and holding serve to edge 3-2 in front, but the Italian raised her intensity once more, reeling off four consecutive games to seal the victory 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Reflecting on the turnaround, Paolini admitted the challenge she faced after the opening set. She noted that Boulter had been striking winners from all areas of the court and that she needed to adjust by playing deeper and increasing the pace of her shots. By staying calm and focusing on tactical solutions rather than nerves, Paolini ultimately found the answers required to complete the comeback and secure her place in the final four.
