Jannik Sinner Withdraws From China Open as Knee Injury Delays Return

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from next week’s China Open in Beijing as he continues to recover from a right knee injury that has kept him out since Wimbledon.

Sinner announced his decision on Friday, confirming that he is not yet ready to return to competitive action. The Italian will therefore be unable to defend the China Open title he won last year.

“My knee is not where I would like it to be, and I’m not ready to compete yet,” Sinner said in a statement shared on social media. He added that he would continue working toward returning to the court as soon as possible.

The 25-year-old has not played since defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12. He subsequently skipped the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open before withdrawing from the US Open because of the same knee problem.

Sinner had enjoyed a highly productive 2026 campaign before his injury layoff. He entered Wimbledon with a 44-3 record and six titles, including his fifth Grand Slam championship at the All England Club.

His absence in Beijing also means he will surrender the ranking points earned from his title there last year. Sinner defeated Learner Tien in the 2025 final to claim his second China Open championship.

Sinner has not confirmed a specific date for his return. The Shanghai Masters, which begins on October 7, is the next major tournament on the calendar after Beijing and could provide another opportunity for his comeback.

The China Open will instead feature Novak Djokovic among its leading attractions. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is returning to Beijing for the first time since 2015 and has won all six of his previous finals at the tournament.
