Jannik Sinner Wins Italian Open to Complete Golden Masters Ahead of Roland Garros

Posted : 18 May 2026

Jannik Sinner strengthened his status as the world’s top-ranked player after capturing the Italian Open title with a straight-sets victory over Casper Ruud on Sunday. The Italian star secured a 6-4, 6-4 win in Rome to claim his sixth consecutive Masters 1000 crown and continue his remarkable dominance on the ATP Tour.

The triumph also completed Sinner’s “Golden Masters,” making him only the second men’s player after Novak Djokovic to win all nine Masters 1000 tournaments. In addition, the 24-year-old became the first Italian man to lift the Rome title since Adriano Panatta achieved the feat five decades ago.

Sinner now heads to Roland Garros carrying a 29-match winning streak and growing confidence on clay. His run in Masters 1000 events has stretched to 34 straight victories, underlining the consistency he has displayed throughout the season. After falling short in last year’s French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner appears determined to capture his first title in Paris.

Speaking after the final, Sinner said his main focus is maintaining his physical and mental condition ahead of the year’s next Grand Slam. He explained that he wants to avoid unnecessary pressure and instead concentrate on rest and preparation before the tournament begins.

Ruud entered the final with one of the strongest clay-court records on the ATP Tour since 2020, but he was unable to overcome Sinner for the first time in their rivalry. The Norwegian made a positive start by taking the opening two games, yet Sinner quickly responded and controlled the match from the baseline with his aggressive shot-making and consistency.

The second set followed a similar pattern as Sinner secured an early break and never allowed his opponent a realistic chance of a comeback. Despite the defeat, Ruud earned praise for his performance in front of a packed crowd in Rome and acknowledged the high level Sinner is currently producing.

Ruud compared the Italian’s dominance to the era once ruled by tennis legends Roger Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. He admitted that Sinner continues to improve and said players on tour must constantly raise their level to compete with the world number one.

It was also a memorable day for Italian tennis in doubles competition. Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori captured the men’s doubles title after defeating Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in a dramatic final.
