Jannik Sinner will return to the ATP Tour as world No. 1 at next month's Rome Masters, following the early exit of Alexander Zverev in Monte Carlo. Sinner, who accepted a three-month doping ban in February, will reclaim his position after his closest rival, Zverev, fell to Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday.
Zverev had been aiming to replace Sinner at the top but could not progress beyond the quarterfinals in any of his six tournaments since the Australian Open.
Sinner’s ban was the result of a dispute with the World Anti-Doping Agency after he failed two drug tests. Although an independent tribunal had initially cleared him of any wrongdoing, the WADA's challenge led to his three-month suspension.
Zverev had hoped to seize the opportunity created by Sinner’s absence to ascend to No. 1, but his recent struggles on the clay court have prevented him from doing so, as he suffered another defeat in Monte Carlo.
Zverev reflected on his performance after the loss to Berrettini, acknowledging his difficulties and admitting that he had been struggling since his injury. “It’s been the worst period since my injury,” he said.
Zverev's inconsistent play continues, and with Sinner returning soon, he will have to wait for another opportunity to challenge for the top ranking.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz, the defending French Open champion and world No. 3, also saw his chances to reclaim the No. 1 spot slip away before Sinner’s return, with his Monte Carlo campaign set to begin against Francisco Cerundolo.
