World number one Jannik Sinner shared an awkward but light-hearted exchange with BBC presenter Clare Balding after his Wimbledon quarter-final victory, quickly shutting down a question about football and the FIFA World Cup.
Sinner booked his place in the semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over Jan-Lennard Struff and spoke to Balding courtside following the match. The Italian discussed his love of tennis and revealed that he enjoys watching as many Wimbledon matches as possible during the tournament.
When Balding suggested he would likely watch the upcoming quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Félix Auger-Aliassime, Sinner agreed, explaining that Wimbledon dominates television coverage during the Championships.
Balding then remarked that football was also attracting plenty of attention because of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Before she could continue, Sinner interrupted with a smile and said, "Don't talk about football, thank you," prompting the presenter to apologise.
The response appeared to reflect Italy's disappointment at failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making football a sensitive topic for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
The conversation quickly returned to tennis as Balding mentioned British wildcard Arthur Fery, who was preparing to face Italian ninth seed Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals. She admitted the BBC would naturally be supporting the British player.
Sinner responded playfully by asking, "Yeah, and?" before acknowledging that home supporters would back Fery. He praised the British youngster for his impressive run but made it clear he would be supporting his fellow Italian.
The top seed described Cobolli as one of the most genuine personalities on the ATP Tour and said his authentic character had made him popular among both players and fans.
The interview followed another light-hearted moment involving Balding earlier in the week. During BBC's Wimbledon coverage, she referenced Tim Henman's heartbreaking semi-final defeat to Goran Ivanišević at the 2001 Championships while discussing Arthur Fery's birthday and potential fairytale run.
Henman quickly interrupted with a smile, asking Balding not to revisit the painful memory before she agreed to move the conversation forward.
Sinner will now turn his attention to the Wimbledon semi-finals as he continues his pursuit of another Grand Slam title, while the brief exchange with Balding has become one of the lighter moments of this year's tournament.
