Jannik Sinner Sets Masters 1000 Winning Record, Books Italian Open Semi-Final Clash With Daniil Medvedev

Posted : 15 May 2026

Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run on the ATP Tour by reaching the semifinals of the Italian Open and setting a new record for consecutive victories in Masters 1000 tournaments. The Italian star defeated Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 in Rome to claim his 32nd straight win at ATP Masters events, surpassing the previous mark set by Novak Djokovic in 2011.

Playing in front of an energetic home crowd, the world No. 1 quickly took control of the match. Rublev struggled to find rhythm throughout the contest, losing serve early in both sets and committing numerous unforced errors. Sinner remained composed and efficient, producing another convincing straight-sets victory despite showing signs of fatigue late in the encounter.

After the match, Sinner admitted the demanding schedule was beginning to take its toll physically. The 24-year-old was seen touching his left thigh during the closing stages but remained confident while serving out the match. He explained that his main focus this season remains the upcoming French Open in Paris, regardless of the outcome in Rome.

With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined through injury, Sinner has emerged as the clear favourite to lift the Italian Open title. The Italian is aiming to become the first home player in 50 years to win the tournament, while also building momentum for a potential career Grand Slam challenge at Roland Garros.

Awaiting Sinner in the semifinals is former Rome champion Daniil Medvedev, who survived a difficult three-set battle against Spanish youngster Martin Landaluce. Medvedev recovered from a poor start to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory in a match filled with long rallies and momentum swings.

Landaluce, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser after replacing injured seed Valentin Vacherot, impressed throughout the competition. The 20-year-old dominated the opening set and looked capable of producing another upset before Medvedev regrouped following a brief rain interruption.

The Russian eventually found his rhythm and raised his level in the decisive moments to book a semifinal meeting with Sinner. Their upcoming clash is expected to be one of the standout matches of the tournament as both players chase a place in the final in Rome.
