Jannik Sinner's Laureus Nomination Withdrawn Following Doping Ban

Posted : 28 February 2025

Jannik Sinner's nomination for the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year award was withdrawn on Thursday following his three-month suspension for failing two drug tests. The Italian world No. 1, who holds both the US Open and Australian Open titles, tested positive for traces of the banned anabolic steroid clostebol in March 2024.

Laureus Academy chairman Sean Fitzpatrick explained that while the panel acknowledged the extenuating circumstances of the case, the ban made Sinner ineligible for the award. The tennis star and his team were officially informed of the decision.

Earlier in February, Sinner accepted a three-month suspension after admitting "partial responsibility" for errors made by his team that led to the failed tests. The 23-year-old’s suspension will conclude on May 4, just in time for him to compete in the French Open, the second Grand Slam event of the year.

Despite the setback, he remains a key figure in the sport, having climbed to the top of the ATP rankings with remarkable performances over the past year.

The Laureus awards, which have been presented annually since 2000, are determined by a jury of 69 sporting legends who make up the Laureus Academy. In 2024, Novak Djokovic claimed the Sportsman of the Year award for a record fifth time, further solidifying his place among tennis's greatest athletes.

Sinner's disqualification from the nomination list marks an unfortunate chapter in his otherwise stellar career, though he is expected to return with a strong competitive presence later in the season.
