Jannik Sinner Prepares for Australian Open Amid Doping Investigation

Posted : 07 January 2025

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner expressed satisfaction with his remarkable 2024 season, but quickly turned his focus to the new year as he prepared to defend his Australian Open title. The 23-year-old Italian enjoyed a breakthrough year, securing his first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, followed by victories at the US Open and ATP Finals. He also helped Italy clinch a second consecutive Davis Cup win, ending the year as the world's top player.

Skipping lead-up events to the Australian Open, Sinner headed straight to Melbourne for his first match of 2025. On a scorching day in Melbourne, he faced a tough challenge against Australian Alexei Popyrin, ranked No. 25 in the world. Despite being 5-2 down in the second set, Sinner rallied to win 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), securing a hard-fought victory on Rod Laver Arena.

Reflecting on his past year, Sinner said, "2024 was an amazing season for me, but it has already gone now." He acknowledged the many milestones he reached both on and off the court, expressing his excitement to return to Melbourne despite the match being part of an exhibition. Sinner emphasized the importance of adjusting to the court's pace and felt confident in the hard work he and his team had put in.

As the Australian Open looms, Sinner's campaign is shadowed by the ongoing doping investigation following two positive tests for clostebol in March. Though he was cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed the decision, and Sinner is awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The outcome of this appeal could significantly impact his preparations for the tournament.
