Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run in 2026 by securing a spot in the Miami Open quarter-finals on Tuesday. The Italian second seed defeated unseeded American Alex Michelsen 7-5, 7-6(4) in a match that lasted one hour and 41 minutes. Sinner, who recently triumphed at Indian Wells, is now just three wins away from completing the prestigious "Sunshine Double."
The opening set was a tightly contested affair as both players remained solid on serve. Sinner eventually found his opening in the 11th game, breaking the world number 40 before comfortably serving out the set. Michelsen, however, refused to back down and surged to a 5-2 lead in the second set. Struggles with the late afternoon sun at Hard Rock Stadium appeared to hinder the American's momentum, allowing Sinner to break back and force a tiebreak.
Sinner’s clinical serve proved to be the difference-maker in the closing moments. He finished the match with 15 aces compared to Michelsen's three, including a powerful unreturned serve to seal the victory. After the match, Sinner admitted the transition from a night session to a daytime fixture was challenging. He praised Michelsen’s resilience, noting that he had to stay focused to avoid a deciding third set.
The Italian star will next face 19th seed Frances Tiafoe in the last eight. Tiafoe earned his place in the quarter-finals by battling past France’s Terence Atmane in three sets. In one of the tournament's biggest surprises, Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce also advanced. The 20-year-old, ranked 151st in the world, saved a match point to upset 32nd seed Sebastian Korda and will now face Jiri Lehecka.
In the women's draw, the semifinal lineup is taking shape. Karolina Muchova reached her first Miami Open semifinal after a grueling straight-sets win over Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Muchova will face American favorite Coco Gauff, who overcame Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The victory marks Gauff's first-ever semifinal appearance in Miami after six previous attempts.
As the tournament enters its final stages, Sinner remains the favorite to add another trophy to his 2026 collection. His victory over Michelsen extends his remarkable record of 28 consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events. Fans are eagerly anticipating the clash between Sinner and Tiafoe, which promises to be a highlight of the quarter-final round.
