Jannik Sinner Makes History with Miami Open Triumph to Complete Rare Sunshine Double

Posted : 30 March 2026

Jannik Sinner etched his name into the tennis record books on Sunday by defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4 to claim the Miami Open title. With this victory, the 24-year-old Italian completed the "Sunshine Double," a rare feat involving back-to-back trophies at the season's first two ATP Masters 1000 events. Sinner is the first man to achieve this since Roger Federer nine years ago and the first ever to do so without dropping a single set across both tournaments.

The final was interrupted twice by heavy rain in South Florida, causing delays that totaled nearly three hours. Despite the stop-and-start nature of the match, Sinner remained composed and clinical against his Czech opponent. He broke Lehecka’s serve early in the first set, ending an incredible streak where Lehecka had not been broken once throughout the entire fortnight in Miami.

Sinner’s serve was a primary weapon during the one-hour and 33-minute contest. In the opening set, he was perfect behind his first delivery, winning 16 out of 16 points. Even when faced with a 0-40 deficit in one of his service games, the Italian remained calm; he landed five consecutive first serves to escape the threat and maintain his momentum.

Lehecka, appearing in his first-ever Masters 1000 final, attempted to use aggressive net play to disrupt the world number two. While the Czech was successful in 13 of his 19 net approaches, he struggled to handle Sinner’s heavy groundstrokes from the baseline. A critical unforced error from Lehecka at 4-4 in the second set handed Sinner the decisive break he needed to serve for the championship.

The victory extends Sinner’s remarkable streak to 34 consecutive sets won at the Masters 1000 level. This run of dominance dates back to the start of the 2025 Paris Masters and underscores his current status as the most consistent player on hard courts. Following his win, Sinner expressed his disbelief at the achievement, noting that winning the Sunshine Double was a career goal he never thought would happen so quickly.

The result has major implications for the ATP world rankings as the tour transitions to the clay-court season. Sinner has now narrowed the gap between himself and world number one Carlos Alcaraz to just 1,190 points. While Alcaraz started 2026 with a 16-match winning streak, Sinner’s current form suggests a fierce battle for the top spot in the coming months.

Jiri Lehecka also leaves Miami with reason to celebrate despite the loss. His run to the final ensures he will rise to a new career-high world ranking of number 14 on Monday. For Sinner, the focus now shifts to the European clay swing, where he will look to carry this historic momentum into the French Open
