Jannik Sinner Extends Winning Streak to 20 Matches After Defeating Cameron Norrie in Madrid

Posted : 28 April 2026

World number one Jannik Sinner continued his outstanding run of form by advancing to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after a straight-sets victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The Italian won 6-2, 7-5 in under 90 minutes, extending his winning streak to 20 matches.

Sinner, who is chasing a fourth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title following victories in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo, matched his best-ever Madrid Open performance by reaching the last eight. He had previously only made the quarter-finals once, in 2024.

The 24-year-old will next face either Czech player Vit Kopriva or 19-year-old Spanish wildcard Rafael Jodar. Both are set to meet in the next round after Jodar’s late-night win in the previous stage.

Against Norrie, Sinner started strongly, breaking twice to take control of the first set after an early exchange of holds. Despite a brief fightback from the British player, the world number one maintained his composure and closed out the match in straight sets.

Norrie briefly raised hopes of a turnaround in the second set, holding serve and breaking back after Sinner initially pulled ahead. However, the Italian regained control at 5-5, breaking decisively before serving out the match.

With this win, Sinner became only the second player in history, after Novak Djokovic, to win his first 20 ATP Masters 1000 matches in a single season. The achievement highlights his consistency across different conditions and surfaces.

After the match, Sinner acknowledged his familiarity with Norrie and praised the importance of adapting to Madrid’s unique conditions. He noted that clay courts often present challenges in finding rhythm and consistency.

He also commented on the tournament schedule, suggesting that late finishes and early match times make recovery difficult for players. Despite this, he expressed satisfaction at progressing in straight sets and reaching another Masters 1000 quarter-final.
