Jannik Sinner reinforced his position as the leading favourite for this year’s French Open after producing a commanding first-round victory over French wildcard Clement Tabur at Roland Garros.
The world number one opened his campaign with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 6-4 win against the 171st-ranked Frenchman, delivering a composed and clinical display on Court Philippe Chatrier. Sinner controlled the match from the outset, striking winners consistently while keeping errors to a minimum during the two-hour encounter.
The 24-year-old Italian is aiming to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the only major title missing from his collection. His chances have been strengthened by the absence of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is sidelined through injury, while Novak Djokovic approaches the latter stages of his career.
Sinner’s latest success extended his winning streak to 30 matches, following an outstanding clay-court season that included titles in Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. His victory in Rome also completed the full set of ATP Masters 1000 trophies, often referred to as the “career Golden Masters”.
Tabur struggled to trouble the top seed throughout the contest and failed to earn a single break point. Sinner’s aggressive baseline play and consistency ensured he remained firmly in control from start to finish.
The Italian returned to Court Philippe Chatrier for the first time since last year’s dramatic French Open final defeat to Alcaraz, where he squandered three championship points in a five-set loss.
Sinner’s route through the tournament may have become more favourable after several high-profile exits in his half of the draw. Sixth seed Daniil Medvedev and ninth seed Alexander Bublik both suffered opening-round defeats, while fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime survived a difficult five-set battle to advance.
Sinner will next face Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo as he continues his pursuit of a first French Open title and a place among tennis history’s elite players.
