Jannik Sinner Beats Arthur Fils to Set Up Madrid Open Final Clash with Alexander Zverev

Posted : 02 May 2026

World No 1 Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run on the ATP Tour by defeating Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 in the Madrid Open semi-final. The victory extended his winning streak to 22 matches and booked his place in Sunday’s final.

Sinner, who has been in exceptional form this season, will now face Alexander Zverev in the title match. With Carlos Alcaraz absent due to injury, the Italian has emerged as the clear favourite at the Caja Mágica after a string of recent Masters 1000 triumphs.

After the match, Sinner admitted he is managing both physical fatigue and mental freshness due to his busy schedule but remains focused on maintaining his high level. He said reaching another major final reflects consistency, even as he continues to push for improvement.

In the semi-final, Sinner started strongly against Fils, breaking early and using his powerful baseline game to control the first set. Although Fils showed resistance in the second set, the Italian remained composed, breaking at a crucial moment to seal victory.

Later, world No 3 Alexander Zverev overcame rising Belgian talent Alexander Blockx 6-2, 7-5 to secure his own place in the final. Zverev, a former Madrid champion, praised Sinner’s current form but expressed confidence in challenging him on Sunday.

The German controlled much of his semi-final but had to work through stubborn resistance from Blockx, eventually breaking late in the second set to close out the win and reach his first final of the season.

The Madrid Open final now sets up a high-profile clash between the tour’s most in-form player and a former champion seeking to halt Sinner’s remarkable streak.
