Jaime Faria Stuns Ben Shelton in Cincinnati as Auger-Aliassime Advances

Ben Shelton suffered a shock early exit at the Cincinnati Masters as Portugal’s Jaime Faria produced the biggest win of his career. The 79th-ranked qualifier defeated the newly crowned Montreal champion 6-4, 6-4 to claim his first victory over a top-10 opponent.

Shelton had moved up to sixth in the world rankings after his success in Montreal, but could not maintain that momentum in Cincinnati. Faria recovered from falling 4-1 behind in the second set and held his nerve during a decisive run to complete the upset.

The Portuguese player described the victory as a special moment, particularly given the occasion, the home support for Shelton and the atmosphere of a night match. The result also sends Faria into the third round of a Masters 1000 event with his confidence soaring.

Elsewhere, second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime made an impressive return to competition by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-5. The Canadian had not played since his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat by Novak Djokovic and had previously withdrawn from the Montreal Masters because of a back problem.

Auger-Aliassime controlled most of the contest and recovered quickly after surrendering his serve late in the second set. He immediately broke back before sealing victory with his seventh ace, giving him an encouraging start to his US Open preparations.

Daniil Medvedev also began his Cincinnati campaign successfully, overcoming Argentina's Marco Trungelliti in straight sets. Taylor Fritz joined the winners after recovering from an early burst of frustration to defeat fellow American Alex Michelsen 6-3, 6-4.
