Jacquemot, Jimenez Kasintseva Cause Major Upsets at Guadalajara Open

Posted : 12 September 2025

The Guadalajara Open Akron witnessed shock results on Thursday as top seeds fell within an hour, with Elsa Jacquemot and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva securing stunning victories over Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova, respectively.

Both former junior Grand Slam champions from 2020 advanced to the quarterfinals of a WTA 500 event for the second time in their careers. Jimenez Kasintseva last reached a tour-level quarterfinal three years ago in Seoul as a lucky loser, while Jacquemot achieved this milestone just last month at the WTA 250 Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland.

Jimenez Kasintseva, the left-hander from Andorra, defeated the second-seeded Kudermetova in 1 hour and 31 minutes, marking her first win over a Top 50 player. She maintained composure throughout, saving all four break points she faced and capitalizing on Kudermetova’s underwhelming serving day, where only 47% of first serves landed.

Meanwhile, Jacquemot came from a set down to overcome top seed Mertens after a match delayed by rain. The 2020 junior Roland Garros champion dominated the resumed portion, winning eight of 10 games and ultimately closing out a career-best victory after 2 hours and 25 minutes on court.

The two 20-year-olds are part of a group of five unseeded quarterfinalists, joined by Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, 17-year-old American Iva Jovic, and wild card Nikola Bartunkova, demonstrating the depth and unpredictability of the tournament.

Meanwhile, former US Open champion Sloane Stephens returned to competitive tennis after nearly seven months away, falling in a hard-fought first-round match to Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The 32-year-old, ranked 1,051 in the PIF WTA Rankings, played a match delayed by rain and lasting 2 hours and 17 minutes. Stephens, sidelined much of the year with a foot injury, expressed optimism on Instagram despite the loss, stating she felt strong and pain-free and ready for upcoming challenges.
