Jack Draper Suffers Fresh Injury Setback After Washington Open Withdrawal

British tennis player Jack Draper has been forced to withdraw from the Mubadala DC Open in Washington after his long-standing left arm injury flared up again, dealing another blow to his comeback plans. The 24-year-old had been due to make his first ATP Tour appearance since missing Wimbledon but pulled out shortly before the tournament after experiencing renewed soreness during practice.

Draper has battled bone bruising in his serving arm for more than a year, an injury that has repeatedly interrupted his progress. Although he had recently said he was feeling physically stronger and had been training well under new coach Andy Murray, the discomfort returned, forcing him to withdraw on medical grounds.

In a message shared on social media, Draper admitted the past several months had been filled with adversity and frustration. Despite the repeated setbacks, he said he remains optimistic, describing patience as his greatest challenge while insisting he is continuing to move closer to full fitness.

The latest withdrawal mirrors what happened before Wimbledon, where Draper also withdrew just a day before his scheduled opening match after initially expressing confidence about his condition. The recurring nature of the injury has become an increasing concern as he continues to manage what he has previously described as a complicated problem.

Draper's injury troubles have severely limited his time on court over the past year. He has played only a handful of matches since suffering the arm problem, with other issues, including knee tendinitis, also disrupting his return earlier this season. His run to the Eastbourne semi-finals offered hope, but the injury resurfaced before Wimbledon and has now ruled him out of another key tournament.

The former British number one is still targeting a return for the ATP Masters events in Montreal and Cincinnati ahead of the US Open. However, after slipping down the world rankings because of his lengthy absence, he is likely to need to qualify or receive a wildcard to compete in the main draw at Flushing Meadows if he regains full fitness. In Washington, American Mackenzie McDonald has taken Draper's place in the tournament draw as a lucky loser.
