Jack Draper Handed Tough Wimbledon Opener Against Taylor Fritz

Posted : 28 June 2026

Jack Draper has been handed one of the toughest opening matches at Wimbledon after being drawn against world No. 7 Taylor Fritz, prompting Sky Sports Tennis presenter Gigi Salmon to describe the draw as far from ideal for the British hopeful.

Draper returns to the All England Club after overcoming another injury setback that kept him out of action for much of the clay-court season. The British left-hander showed encouraging signs during his comeback by reaching the semi-finals at the Eastbourne International, where he was again joined by coach Andy Murray.

Despite his recent progress, Salmon believes the opening-round clash with Fritz presents a significant challenge. The American arrives at Wimbledon in excellent form after reaching back-to-back grass-court finals in Stuttgart and Halle, following his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals last year.

Although Draper holds a narrow 3-2 advantage in their head-to-head meetings, Fritz has developed into one of the strongest players on grass. Their only previous meeting on the surface came at Queen's Club in 2022, where Draper claimed victory.

Salmon noted that the timing of the draw makes the contest even more difficult because Wimbledon will be only Draper's second tournament since returning from injury. She added that a more favourable opponent would have given the Briton a better opportunity to build confidence during the opening week.

Before Wimbledon, Draper admitted his priority was to remain healthy rather than place unnecessary pressure on himself. The 24-year-old has endured several injury interruptions in recent seasons, making fitness a key focus as he attempts to establish himself among the world's leading players.

This year's Championships will feature a strong British presence, with 21 home players competing across the men's and women's singles draws. The group includes direct entrants, qualifiers and wildcard recipients, while four British players are set to make their Wimbledon main-draw debuts.

Beyond the British challenge, Wimbledon also promises several major storylines. One of the biggest talking points is the return of Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, who is set to compete once again at the All England Club at the age of 44.

With several title contenders entering the tournament in strong form and a sizeable home contingent hoping to impress, the opening week is expected to deliver plenty of high-profile matches. Draper's showdown with Fritz is already regarded as one of the standout first-round encounters and could provide an early test of the Briton's fitness and ambitions.
