Jack Draper Defeats Gael Monfils to Lead Historic British Trio into French Open Third Round

Posted : 30 May 2025

Jack Draper delivered a standout performance at the French Open, defeating veteran Gael Monfils in a gripping four-set match to reach the third round. Draper’s 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory under the lights at Court Philippe Chatrier was both a personal triumph and a historic moment, as it marked the first time since 1968 that three British men have progressed to the third round in Paris. Despite the crowd’s overwhelming support for the 38-year-old Monfils, Draper, the fifth seed, held his nerve and composure in key moments, especially as Monfils threatened to force a deciding set.

Reflecting on the match, Draper admitted to being overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the theatrics of his opponent, describing the experience as mentally draining. He praised Monfils’ showmanship and acknowledged the challenge of facing such a charismatic and unpredictable competitor. Draper's victory is widely considered one of the biggest of his career so far at Roland Garros, showcasing his growing maturity and mental toughness on the court.

Draper now joins fellow Britons Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie in the last 32. Fearnley advanced after Ugo Humbert retired during their match due to injury, while Norrie secured a comfortable straight-sets win over Federico Gomez. The tournament will see a rare all-British clash between Fearnley and Norrie, marking the first time two British men will face each other beyond the opening round in the French Open's Open era.
