Jack Draper advanced to the last 16 of the Italian Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva, though the match saw the British player struggle to contain his emotions. Despite the straight-set victory, Draper showed visible frustration during the second set, smashing his racquet on the clay after missing a drop shot that allowed Kopriva to win a game. His actions left three marks on the court and earned him a warning from the chair umpire.
Draper, seeded fifth in the tournament and fresh off a runner-up finish in Madrid, maintained his serve throughout the match and took the first set in 41 minutes.
However, Kopriva put up a strong fight in the second, saving multiple break points and nearly capitalizing on Draper's lapse in focus. Draper regrouped just in time, holding serve to move ahead and eventually securing a crucial break that set up his path to victory.
The Briton's frustration seemed to fuel his performance, as he hit 21 winners compared to Kopriva's 10, though he also made more unforced errors. After squandering two match points, Draper finally sealed the win on the third attempt, navigating a tricky bounce caused by one of the divots he had made earlier.
Speaking after the match, Draper admitted to feeling low on energy and acknowledged the mental and physical toll of constant competition at a high level.
Draper will now face France's Corentin Moutet in the next round. Moutet pulled off a significant upset by defeating ninth seed Holger Rune in a nearly four-hour battle. The 26-year-old earned a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) victory to record his first-ever win against a top-10 opponent, setting up a compelling clash with the in-form British number one.
