Jack Draper continued his encouraging return to form at the Eastbourne Open on Wednesday, defeating fellow Briton Jack Pinnington Jones in straight sets to book a place in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon warm-up event.
Playing in challenging hot conditions on England’s south coast, Draper secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory as he builds momentum following a lengthy spell sidelined by arm and knee injuries. The win marked another positive step in his comeback and his growing partnership with former world No. 1 Andy Murray, who has joined his coaching team.
The 24-year-old has played only a handful of matches in recent months and admitted that his confidence had been severely affected by his injury setbacks. However, he expressed satisfaction with how quickly he has regained his competitive level since returning to action.
Draper revealed that he skipped the Queen’s Club Championships because he did not feel physically ready to compete, making his recent performances in Eastbourne even more encouraging ahead of Wimbledon.
The former world No. 4 started strongly against Pinnington Jones, breaking serve early in the opening set. Although he missed an opportunity to close out the set at 5-4, Draper quickly regained control after his opponent leveled the score and eventually sealed the opener with a pair of aces.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Draper breaking early and maintaining his advantage throughout. While Pinnington Jones stayed within reach on the scoreboard, he struggled to create sustained pressure against his higher-ranked compatriot.
Draper’s consistent serving and aggressive baseline play ultimately proved decisive as he wrapped up the match in straight sets and moved into the last eight.
Next up for the British star is a quarterfinal clash against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo, with a place in the semifinals at stake.
Despite the defeat, Pinnington Jones praised Draper’s quality and potential, highlighting both his talent and continued rise through the rankings. The two players share a close friendship, making the match a difficult encounter on a personal level.
As Wimbledon approaches, Draper’s performances in Eastbourne provide further evidence that he is regaining confidence and fitness, with the guidance of Andy Murray appearing to have a positive impact on his return to top-level competition.
