Jabeur, Ostapenko, Keys, and Sakkari Advance at Adelaide International

Posted : 08 January 2025

Ons Jabeur advanced to the last 16 at the Adelaide International with a 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 victory over fourth seed Danielle Collins, marking a strong step in her comeback after dealing with a shoulder injury last year. The Tunisian wildcard, ranked 40th, had a strong run last week in Brisbane and is now focusing on the Australian Open. Despite a long injury layoff, Jabeur felt her forehand played a pivotal role in the win and expressed gratitude for the time off, which helped her recover physically and mentally.

Collins, a 2022 Australian Open finalist, returned to the WTA circuit after a lengthy absence, having not played since September. The American had initially planned to retire at the end of 2024 but reversed that decision, marking her return to action with this loss. Jabeur will now face Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva in the next round, continuing her positive momentum as she prepares for Melbourne.

In other matches, defending champion Jelena Ostapenko battled through a difficult first set to defeat Magdalena Frech 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Latvian, ranked 17th, struggled with unforced errors early in the match but found her rhythm and ultimately dominated. Ostapenko will face Madison Keys in the next round after Keys thrashed Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-1 in her own impressive performance.

American Keys displayed dominant form, breaking Haddad Maia four times, and expressed satisfaction with her nearly flawless play. Meanwhile, Maria Sakkari, returning from a shoulder injury, defeated Czech Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-3, and will meet top seed Jessica Pegula in the next round. Sakkari acknowledged her ongoing recovery process but is optimistic, noting that each match helps improve her game.
