ITTF West Africa: Kuti, Mati, Ojomu Lead Nigeria’s Dominant Performance

Posted : 18 July 2025

Nigeria's men’s team reclaimed their title at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships with a commanding 3–0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the final, held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The four-day championship, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2025 African Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, witnessed Nigeria asserting its dominance on home soil across both the men’s and women’s events.

The Nigerian men’s team, which lost the title to Togo in 2024, returned with renewed focus. Led by Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, they breezed through the group stage—dropping only one set to Côte d’Ivoire—and swept the Ivorians 3–0 in the final.

In the women’s category, Nigeria’s team, led by Ajoke Ojomu, retained their regional crown after decisive victories over Benin Republic, Ghana, and Guinea.

The singles competition resumes on Friday, with reigning men’s singles champion Oba Kizito of Côte d’Ivoire facing stiff competition from Nigeria’s Taiwo Mati and Matthew Kuti. Players from Togo and Benin Republic are also expected to mount serious challenges for the title.

Guinea’s Maret Camara was a standout in the early rounds, topping Group 9 with a dominant 3–0 win over Ghana’s James Marfo. Nigeria's only loss in the singles group stage came when Matthew Fabunmi narrowly lost 3–2 to Benin’s Atanda Adou in Group 11.

In women’s singles, Nigerian stars Ajoke Ojomu, Kabirat Ayoola, and Aishat Rabiu all advanced to the knockout stage after topping their respective groups.

The championship concludes on Saturday, July 19, with final matches to decide titles in both the men’s and women’s singles events.

Ten countries, including hosts Nigeria, are participating in this key regional tournament. The top three finishers in each event will earn qualification for the continental finals scheduled to take place in Kigali this October.
