Italy advanced to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup on Tuesday after a dramatic quarterfinal victory over hosts China in Shenzhen, thanks to heroic three-hour efforts from Jasmine Paolini and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
The tie opened with a remarkable performance from Cocciaretto, who overturned near-certain defeat against Yue Yuan. The Italian trailed 6-4, 5-2 before clawing back to take the match 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in a contest lasting nearly three hours. Cocciaretto showed resilience once again in the decider, coming from 0-4 down to snatch victory with a crucial late break in the 11th game.
Reflecting on her comeback, Cocciaretto admitted she needed a mental shift to stay alive in the match. “Something changed in my mind and I said, ‘Go for it, be aggressive, and no matter what, don’t think about the score.’ And that’s what I did,” said the 24-year-old, who also confessed to feeling nervous
playing in front of tennis legend Billie Jean King, who was in attendance.
Paolini, ranked world No. 8, then sealed Italy’s place in the last four with a spirited win over Wang Xinyu. After losing the opening set and falling behind in both the second and third, Paolini fought back to claim a 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 triumph. “It was a really tough one. Xinyu was playing really good tennis. Today was a bit tough for me, but I tried to stay there for the team, the fans, and the country,” said Paolini after the match.
The victory secures Italy a place in the semifinals of the competition for the third consecutive year. They will now face the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal between Spain and Ukraine as they continue their defense of the title.
