Italian Tennis Thrives Amid Jannik Sinner's Return to Rome Open

Posted : 06 May 2025

The past three months without Sinner have allowed players like Musetti, now ranked No. 9, and Darderi and Cobolli, who won titles in Marrakesh and Bucharest, to showcase their talent on the ATP circuit. Filippo Volandri, Italy's Davis Cup captain, has praised the country's golden age of tennis, a product of years of dedicated work.

Since 2016, Italy's ATP tournament victories have surged, with five of those coming from Masters 1000 events. Sinner, alongside Matteo Berrettini, is viewed as the result of a well-established system that has given Italy the depth needed to thrive at the top level. The Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) has made strides in decentralizing its training programs, bringing expertise closer to young players across the country.

A key part of the Italian tennis renaissance is a shift in playing style, emphasizing speed over endurance, with an emphasis on powerful serves and returns. This change in approach is accompanied by a robust coaching system that has supported Italian tennis' rise, with veteran figures like Brad Gilbert recognizing the country's commitment and long-term investment in the sport.
