Intense Battles, Ranking Points at Stake as 2025 WTT Contender Lagos Heats Up

Posted : 23 July 2025

The 2025 WTT Contender Lagos is in full swing, offering a vital opportunity for players to gain crucial world ranking points at Africa’s most dynamic WTT Contender Series event. Taking place over five days at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the tournament has drawn international attention for its electric atmosphere and highly competitive matchups.

As the tournament's second day of qualifying unfolded on Wednesday, Lagos continued to solidify its reputation as a hub for top-tier table tennis action. Winners in each event category stand to earn 400 valuable ranking points, potentially boosting their global positions. Runners-up will collect 280 points, with semi-finalists and quarter-finalists receiving 140 and 70 points, respectively.

Top international stars, including Denmark’s Anders Lind and Japan’s Hina Hayata, are drawing attention as favourites in the Men’s and Women’s Singles draws. Hayata, 25, is making her debut in Lagos and aims to capture her first WTT Contender title on African soil. With an already impressive career that includes five WTT Contender titles and a WTT Star Contender win, the Japanese star is widely admired for her high-spin style and sharp technique under coach Daisuka Ishida.

In the men’s field, Anders Lind returns to Lagos with strong local support and a familiarity with the venue’s conditions. A 13-time national champion in Denmark, Lind is targeting his first Contender title of the season after finishing runner-up at WTT Contender Tunis earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the qualifying rounds have been packed with drama, skill, and intensity, as players compete fiercely for limited spots in the main draw. Nigerian athletes have been prominently featured, eager to capitalize on home advantage. They are joined by other African contenders, all striving for breakthrough performances on an international stage.

The competition is just as fierce in the Doubles and Mixed Doubles events, which have kicked off from the first round. Unseeded teams are battling hard to upset the odds and advance into the elite stages. With plenty at stake and strong international participation, the 2025 WTT Contender Lagos is proving to be a thrilling spectacle for table tennis fans worldwide.
