Iga Swiatek Reaches Wuhan Open Quarterfinals With 150th WTA 1000 Win

Posted : 15 October 2026

Iga Swiatek reached another career milestone on Thursday, defeating American lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the Wuhan Open quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. The Polish star secured her 150th career victory at WTA 1000 level, strengthening her position among the most successful players in the tournament category.

Since the format was introduced in 1990, Swiatek has become only the third player to record 150 wins within her first 50 main-draw appearances at this level. Only Martina Hingis, with 162 victories, and Serena Williams, with 153, achieved more during the same number of appearances.

The seventh-seeded Swiatek said she was pleased with her performance, highlighting the importance of adapting to her opponent and playing with confidence. The six-time Grand Slam champion added that her game had improved compared with the beginning of the season and that she was ready to push further in Wuhan.

Swiatek’s victory also improved her prospects of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals. The seventh seed is aiming to add another major title to her collection and strengthen her record at WTA 1000 events, where she is pursuing a 13th championship.

Her next opponent will be Ann Li or Janice Tjen, as she looks to continue her progress in a tournament that has already seen several leading players eliminated.

The Wuhan Open has been marked by a string of unexpected results. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula exited earlier in the week, while Karolina Muchova and Iva Jovic also suffered defeats in the latest round.

Poland’s Maja Chwalinska advanced after defeating Jovic 6-4, 6-1 and will face Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Russia’s Diana Shnaider beat Muchova 7-5, 6-3 to set up a clash with Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.

Britain’s Sonay Kartal continued her impressive run by sweeping aside Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-0. Kartal will next meet Elina Svitolina, who defeated Chinese wildcard Guo Hanyu 6-1, 6-4 to reach the last eight.

With several high-profile names already out, Swiatek has an opportunity to make a deep run and strengthen her bid for another WTA 1000 title.
