Iga Swiatek Reaches Cincinnati Quarterfinals After Overcoming Diane Parry

Posted : 20 August 2026

Defending champion Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA Cincinnati Masters after defeating France’s Diane Parry 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.

The seventh-seeded Pole needed four match points to complete the victory, extending her impressive run in Cincinnati. Swiatek has now reached the tournament’s quarterfinals for a fourth straight year and has collected her 30th quarterfinal appearance at WTA 1000 level.

Swiatek had a chance to serve out the match at 5-2 in the second set but was broken by Parry. However, the six-time Grand Slam champion responded immediately, creating three more match points in the following game before sealing victory when Parry sent a backhand into the net after 88 minutes.

Swiatek said she was pleased with her performance despite having to generate additional power against Parry’s heavy use of slice. The 2026 Toronto champion added that she remained focused on winning the match rather than thinking about statistics or milestones.

Pegula Survives Cirstea Test

Third seed Jessica Pegula also booked her place in the quarterfinals, although she was pushed all the way by Romania’s Sorana Cirstea before prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Pegula appeared on course for a straightforward victory after taking the opening set, but the experienced Cirstea, who is in her 22nd season on tour, responded strongly. Windy conditions made the contest even more difficult as both players struggled to maintain momentum.

The deciding set featured several service breaks and missed chances, but Pegula eventually found her composure late in the match. She stepped up her aggression in the closing stages to secure the win after more than two hours on court.

Pegula admitted the match was difficult, particularly with Cirstea raising her level after losing the first set. She also acknowledged that the wind affected her volleying and overhead shots but was pleased with the way she fought through the final stages.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk produced one of the day’s biggest comebacks, recovering from a set down to defeat fifth seed and reigning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
