Iga Swiatek Opens Clay Season with Commanding Win Over Siegemund

Posted : 16 April 2026

Iga Swiatek made a confident start to her clay-court season on Wednesday, defeating Germany’s Laura Siegemund in straight sets at the Stuttgart Open. The third seed secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the last 16, marking her first match under new coach Francisco Roig.

The match also represented a fresh beginning for Swiatek following a difficult spell on tour. The former world No. 1 had exited early at the Miami Open last month and subsequently ended her coaching partnership with Wim Fissette before teaming up with Roig, who previously worked for many years with Rafael Nadal.

Despite a challenging season that has yet to see her reach a semifinal, Swiatek showed strong signs of returning to form on her preferred surface. The four-time French Open champion, who has claimed 10 WTA clay titles overall, looked comfortable throughout and never allowed Siegemund to build momentum.

Swiatek, who received a first-round bye, dominated with five breaks of serve and maintained control from start to finish, preventing the German wildcard from mounting any serious challenge.

She now moves into the quarterfinals, where she will face either American Alycia Parks or rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva.

Andreeva also advanced in Stuttgart after a hard-fought three-set victory over reigning champion Jelena Ostapenko, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The 18-year-old continued her strong clay-court form following her recent WTA 500 title in Linz.

In a tightly contested match, Andreeva responded well after dropping the opening set, recovering from pressure moments including double faults while serving. She eventually held her nerve in the decider, breaking Ostapenko late to seal the win in their first career meeting.

Elsewhere in the draw, Alycia Parks moved through with a straight-sets win over Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue. However, there was a surprise earlier in the day as fifth seed Jasmine Paolini suffered a heavy first-round defeat, losing 6-2, 6-2 to world No. 79 Zeynep Sonmez.

With top seeds already falling, the Stuttgart draw is opening up as the clay season gathers pace.
