Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek began her Wuhan Open campaign with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over fellow Polish player Magdalena Frech on Wednesday. The seventh seed secured her 40th win of the season, advancing to the round of 16 after a match that lasted one hour and 42 minutes.
Despite the convincing final score, Swiatek faced early resistance from Frech, who took a 2-0 lead in the opening set. The former world number one responded strongly, winning six consecutive games to take the set after saving seven of the eight break points she faced. Her ability to remain composed during the difficult opening stages proved crucial to securing the advantage.
Swiatek carried that momentum into the second set, winning four games in succession to establish a 4-0 lead. Frech briefly halted the run by breaking her opponent's serve, but Swiatek quickly regained control and closed out the match without further complications.
Reflecting on the contest, Swiatek explained that familiarity with her opponent made consistency and disciplined shot selection particularly important. She recognised Frech's ability to chase down difficult balls and use an opponent's power against them, adding that she was pleased with how effectively she maintained her game plan.
The victory keeps Swiatek in contention for a potential quarter-final meeting with top seed Aryna Sabalenka, a three-time Wuhan Open champion. Swiatek will next face either Lanlana Tararudee or Ashlyn Krueger as she continues her bid to secure a place at the season-ending WTA Finals.
Meanwhile, Britain's Sonay Kartal produced one of the day's biggest surprises by defeating ninth seed Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5. Ranked 170th in the world, Kartal delivered a dominant opening set before holding her nerve in a more competitive second set to complete the upset.
The win represents a significant milestone for Kartal, who missed six months of the season because of a spinal stress fracture. She now advances to face either Jasmine Paolini or Nikola Bartunkova in the next round, with the victory providing an encouraging boost to her comeback.
