Iga Swiatek Cruises Into Toronto Semifinals With Dominant Win Over Diana Shnaider

Iga Swiatek delivered one of her most commanding performances of the season on Monday, defeating Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-1 in just 64 minutes to reach the National Bank Open semifinals in Toronto.

The seventh-seeded Pole immediately established control, breaking Shnaider in the opening game and maintaining pressure throughout the first set. Another break at 5-2 put Swiatek within touching distance of the opener, which she secured after her opponent committed another forehand error.

Swiatek continued in the same fashion after the changeover. Shnaider managed occasional moments of resistance, but another break gave Swiatek a 2-1 advantage and the former world number one proceeded to win the final six games of the match.

The victory was particularly encouraging for Swiatek after a season that has not consistently produced the results she has come to expect. Her level in Toronto, however, has given her renewed confidence as she prepares for the latter stages of the tournament.

Swiatek said her confidence has been growing because of the work she has put in during training. She credited her routines and daily focus for helping her translate that preparation into strong performances on court.

Her next challenge will be Elina Svitolina, who fought back from losing the opening set to defeat 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 and book her place in the last four.

The semifinal will give Swiatek another opportunity to settle the rivalry with Svitolina. The Ukrainian has won their two meetings this season, claiming three-set victories at Indian Wells and Rome, although Swiatek leads their overall head-to-head record 4-3.

Swiatek will now look to carry the momentum from her emphatic quarterfinal victory into the semifinal as she continues her pursuit of the Toronto title.
