Iga Swiatek Battles Past Taylor Townsend to Begin Wimbledon Title Defense

Posted : 30 June 2026

Defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek overcame a determined challenge from American Taylor Townsend to begin her title defense with a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory on Tuesday.

The world No. 3 looked in complete control after dominating the opening set, but Townsend responded impressively in the second to force a deciding set. Swiatek briefly found herself in danger of becoming only the third reigning women's Wimbledon champion in the Open Era to suffer a first-round exit.

The decisive set proved to be a stern test, with the opening game lasting 21 minutes before Swiatek eventually regained her composure. The six-time Grand Slam champion then secured the crucial service breaks she needed to seal victory and book her place in the second round.

After converting match point, an emotional Swiatek covered her face with a towel as the relief of avoiding an early exit became evident. The victory also marked her first three-set win of the season after enduring a challenging run in recent tournaments.

Reflecting on the match, the Polish star admitted it had been a difficult period both physically and mentally. She said not everything had gone according to plan in recent weeks, making the comeback victory even more satisfying. Swiatek added that defending her Wimbledon crown carries extra pressure, but she was pleased to stay composed when it mattered most.

Townsend's aggressive baseline play repeatedly tested the defending champion and threatened to produce another surprise result at a Grand Slam. However, the American was unable to capitalize despite pushing Swiatek to the limit. Townsend, who has never advanced beyond the second round at Wimbledon, was ultimately unable to maintain her momentum in the final set.

Swiatek will now face former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova in the second round as she continues her quest for another title at the All England Club.

Elsewhere, the men's draw produced a major upset as fourth seed Ben Shelton was eliminated in the opening round by Finland's Otto Virtanen. Shelton, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year, missed a match point before losing an epic five-set contest 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) that lasted more than four hours.

The victory sends world No. 140 Virtanen into the second round, where he will meet British wildcard Arthur Fery. After the match, the Finn said a strong grass-court season had prepared him well for Wimbledon and expressed his delight at returning to the tournament after missing last year's edition because of injuries.
