Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and recent French Open winner Mirra Andreeva endured disappointing exits from the Bad Homburg Open on Wednesday, as both stars were knocked out of the grass-court tournament in Germany.
Swiatek, ranked world No. 3, was beaten by American Emma Navarro in a hard-fought three-set encounter. The Polish star lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted just over two hours, raising questions about her preparations ahead of the defense of her Wimbledon title.
Competing for the first time since her French Open campaign ended, Swiatek struggled to find consistency early on. Navarro raced into an early lead and capitalized on several costly double faults from the former world No. 1 to take the opening set.
Swiatek responded strongly in the second set, losing only two games as she appeared to regain control. However, Navarro maintained her composure in the decider, securing a crucial break of serve before closing out one of the biggest victories of her season.
After the match, Navarro admitted that difficult conditions affected both players and said her serve proved decisive during the key moments of the contest.
Earlier in the day, French Open champion Mirra Andreeva also suffered an unexpected defeat in her first appearance since lifting the Roland Garros trophy. The 19-year-old was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Andreeva entered the tournament after skipping last week's Berlin Open in order to recover and focus on her Wimbledon preparations. However, her first grass-court match of the season proved challenging against the experienced Alexandrova.
The teenager started competitively but lost momentum as Alexandrova took control of the match. Although Andreeva staged a brief comeback in the second set after falling behind, the world No. 19 remained composed and completed the victory in straight sets.
Alexandrova's reward is a quarterfinal showdown with Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who advanced after defeating Elise Mertens earlier in the tournament.
Elsewhere, fourth seed Karolina Muchova booked her place in the last eight with a commanding victory over Irina-Camelia Begu. She will next face Denmark’s Clara Tauson, who battled back from a set down to eliminate Zheng Qinwen.
The tournament also saw the withdrawal of Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian announced that the physical demands of her previous-round win over Liudmila Samsonova had taken a greater toll than expected, forcing her to pull out before her scheduled quarterfinal against Wang Xinyu.
With Wimbledon just around the corner, the results in Bad Homburg have added another layer of intrigue as several leading contenders continue to fine-tune their form on grass.
