Ibadan Tennis Club Marks Centennial, Calls on Members to Shape Next Century of Sporting Excellence

Posted : 17 December 2025

The President of the 1925 Ibadan Tennis Club (ITC), Oladipupo Sule, has appealed to members to dedicate themselves to shaping the club’s sporting future. He emphasized the importance of fostering a spirit of unity, perseverance, and excellence as the association looks forward to the next century.

Sule made this call during the club’s Centennial anniversary celebrations, which also included an end-of-year dinner, patrons’ investiture, and an award ceremony held at the ITC premises in Ibadan, Oyo State. The event marked a historic milestone for one of Nigeria’s oldest sports and social clubs.

Founded in 1925, ITC has a rich history that blends recreational tennis, community engagement, and social development. The club’s centenary celebrations highlighted its evolution, including the integration of women into its activities, ongoing infrastructure development, and a commitment to nurturing Nigerian sports and social life.

During his address, Sule encouraged members to view the centennial as both a celebration and a call to action.

“Our work is not yet complete. Several planned projects were paused due to financial limitations. Tonight, we ask each member to contribute generously so that the dreams we hold for ITC can be realized,” he said, urging continued dedication to the club’s values.

On the sidelines of the celebrations, Aremo John Adeleke, Chairman of the Centennial Anniversary Committee, highlighted the club’s resilience. He noted that ITC has weathered many challenges over the past 100 years, growing its leadership and infrastructure despite economic difficulties, and praised the influx of new members that has strengthened the association.

Adeleke also revealed ongoing and future initiatives, including the renovation of the Scotch Hall, which had been inactive for decades, and the nearly completed basketball pavilion. He stressed that while government support has been limited in recent years, the club continues to make a societal impact through its committed membership.

He urged members to safeguard ITC’s legacy for future generations. “As inheritors of this proud heritage, we must work diligently to sustain and enhance it so that the achievements of today resonate for decades to come,” Adeleke said.

Prominent awardees at the event included Sola Ayandele, Jubril Dotun Sanusi, and Aderemi Oseni, recognizing their contributions to the club and broader community.
