Holger Rune Says Return Not Ready Yet but Confident of Beating Sinner and Alcaraz

Posted : 22 June 2026

Holger Rune has admitted that he is still not ready to return to competitive tennis as he continues his recovery from a left Achilles injury sustained in October.

The former world No. 4 has not played since the setback and recently withdrew from Wimbledon. His ranking has since dropped to No. 63, reflecting his extended spell away from the tour.

Speaking to AFP, the 23-year-old Dane said he remains patient with his rehabilitation process and is not rushing his comeback, stressing that his return will depend entirely on when he feels fully ready.

Rune explained that he is now dealing with a more serious injury situation than in the past, but insisted he retains strong belief in his ability to recover and return to top form.

Despite his absence, the 2023 Wimbledon quarter-finalist expressed confidence that he can compete with and defeat the sport’s leading players, including world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

He said he has begun hitting balls again and that both his Achilles and knee are responding well, describing his recovery as progressing positively but still ongoing.

Reflecting on his 2024 season before the injury, Rune admitted that a packed schedule contributed to physical strain, saying the constant travel and matches across multiple continents proved “too tough” on his body.

Now focused on recovery, he says he feels no pressure and is prioritising a full and sustainable return, aiming to enjoy his time back on court when the moment arrives.

Rune added that once he returns, his focus will be on major tournaments such as the Grand Slams and Masters 1000 events, which he considers the highest level of the sport.

He also made clear that he is not intimidated by the current dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, stating that he has already proven he can beat them and believes consistency will be the key to future success.
