Heather Watson, Harriet Dart Set for All-British US Open Qualifying Clash

Heather Watson and Harriet Dart will meet in the final round of US Open qualifying, guaranteeing a British player a place in the women’s singles main draw. Watson reached the deciding stage after edging Spain’s Angela Fita Boluda 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (10-5) in a match lasting almost three hours, while Dart defeated 16-year-old American Kristina Penickova 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.

Watson, 34, had to remain composed after twice holding a break advantage in the final set and serving for the match before being forced into a 10-point tie-break. Victory leaves her one win away from returning to the US Open main draw for the first time since 2021.

The British contingent also received strong results in the men's qualifying competition. Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel and Harry Wendelken all advanced to the final round, joining six British players in total who reached the final qualifying stage.

Fearnley recovered from a difficult position to defeat France’s Luka Pavlovic 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 and will face Austria’s Jurij Rodionov. Samuel overcame fellow Briton Billy Harris 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and next meets former top-20 player Cristian Garin.

Wendelken produced perhaps the most dramatic comeback of the trio, saving a match point before beating Switzerland’s Remy Bertola 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 after three hours. He will face Lithuania’s Vilius Gaubas for a place in the main draw.

Francesca Jones also remains in contention after defeating Germany’s Mona Barthel 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-2. She will take on Taiwan’s Joanna Garland in the final qualifying round, while Katie Boulter has already secured her place in the main draw.

Elsewhere, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu also moved within one victory of reaching the main draw. Zheng defeated Clara Burel 6-1, 7-5, while Andreescu beat Veronika Podrez 6-1, 6-3.
