Hannah Klugman Takes Positives from Breakthrough Nottingham Open Campaign

British rising star Hannah Klugman believes her week at the Nottingham Open has provided invaluable experience as she continues her transition from junior tennis to the professional circuit.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough tournament, claiming her first WTA Tour victory after defeating fellow Briton Harriet Dart in the opening round. Klugman entered the main draw as a lucky loser and made the most of the opportunity, gaining exposure to a higher level of competition.

Her impressive run came to an end in the second round when she was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by world number 27 Marie Bouzkova. Despite the defeat, Klugman showed promising signs, particularly in the opening set, where she challenged the experienced Czech and created several opportunities to take control of the match.

Klugman recovered well after falling behind early and demonstrated her defensive skills with several impressive rallies. She also earned three break points that could have given her a significant advantage in the first set. However, Bouzkova held firm under pressure and finished the set strongly before taking command in the second.

As the match progressed, Klugman struggled with consistency, recording a high number of unforced errors and several double faults. Nevertheless, the teenager remained encouraged by her overall performance and the lessons gained from competing against a top-ranked opponent.

Reflecting on the tournament, Klugman said the experience of training and competing alongside established professionals had given her a clearer understanding of what is required to succeed at the highest level. She noted that facing players ranked inside the world's top 150 and 200 had accelerated her development and provided motivation for the future.

The Nottingham Open run will also have a positive impact on her ranking, with the young Briton expected to climb nearly 100 places in the WTA standings. Earlier this week, she was also awarded a wildcard entry into the main draw of The Championships, Wimbledon, ensuring she will make her debut in the senior singles event at the prestigious Grand Slam.

Klugman remained upbeat after the loss, praising Bouzkova's quality while highlighting the positives from her own performance. She also expressed appreciation for the support she received from the home crowd, describing her mental approach throughout the match as one of the strongest aspects of her game.

Elsewhere on the grass-court circuit, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the quarter-finals at the Queen's Club Championships after defeating Corentin Moutet. The Spaniard joked about seeking permission from Wimbledon officials to continue his superstition of wearing mismatched socks during matches.

Davidovich Fokina will next face defending champion Tommy Paul for a place in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata staged a comeback victory over Jiri Lehecka to reach the last eight.

At the Halle Open, Alexander Zverev continued his strong form with a straight-sets win over compatriot Yannick Hanfmann. American star Ben Shelton also progressed and will meet fellow American Taylor Fritz in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash.

In Berlin, one of the biggest surprises of the week came from Alexandra Eala, who defeated former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in straight sets to secure a place in the quarter-finals. For Klugman, however, the focus now shifts to Wimbledon, where she will look to build on the confidence and experience gained during a memorable week in Nottingham.
