Grigor Dimitrov Vows to Keep Chasing Grand Slam Dream After Wimbledon Exit

Posted : 07 July 2026

Grigor Dimitrov has insisted he will continue pursuing his dream of winning a Grand Slam title despite suffering a heartbreaking fourth-round exit at Wimbledon.

The 35-year-old Bulgarian was beaten 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) by British wildcard Arthur Fery in an entertaining five-set contest on Centre Court. The defeat denied Dimitrov another appearance in the quarter-finals of a major tournament, while Fery celebrated the biggest victory of his professional career.

The result also carried emotional significance for Dimitrov. A year earlier, he had been forced to retire injured while leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Although he avoided injury this time and battled until the final point, the outcome was another painful disappointment.

Speaking after the match, Dimitrov admitted the defeat hurt but chose to focus on the positives from another deep run at the All England Club.

"I don't know, happier memories," Dimitrov said with a smile. "On the court it's a loss again, so it's not so happy. But I'm going to choose to see it as a happy moment."

The former world No. 3 said every opportunity to compete on one of tennis' biggest stages remains special at this stage of his career. He acknowledged that while he wanted to progress further, he ultimately fell short against an inspired opponent.

"Every match that I've played so far has been filled with so many emotions. It's sad for sure. Of course, I wanted to do well and even better. At least now I know that I just didn't have enough in me to make it happen."

Despite the setback, Dimitrov made it clear that his biggest ambition remains unchanged. The Bulgarian, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2014 and won the ATP Finals in 2017, believes he can still compete for the sport's biggest prizes.

"Will I win a Grand Slam? I don't know. But I keep giving myself opportunities to get there. The goal of winning a Grand Slam has never disappeared. I'm going to keep trying."

Dimitrov also reflected on the challenges of extending his career against a new generation of players. He admitted maintaining his level now requires more effort than earlier in his career and said he must carefully manage both his physical preparation and recovery.

"I can't just flip the switch after 52 weeks and expect to play lights out," he explained. "I have to fight even more right now. Everything kind of doubles up for me from now on and I need to be very selective with everything that I do on and off the court."

Although another Wimbledon campaign ended in disappointment, Dimitrov remains determined to keep competing at the highest level as he continues his pursuit of the one major achievement still missing from his accomplished career.
