Coco Gauff secured her place in a second consecutive Italian Open final after defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals on Thursday. The American world No. 4 showed resilience after a slow start to continue her strong run in Rome.
Gauff initially fell behind as Cirstea built a 4-2 lead, but she quickly regained control by winning four straight games to claim the first set. In the second set, she faced further resistance, with Cirstea breaking back on multiple occasions, but Gauff eventually secured a decisive break in the eighth game before closing out the match in just over an hour.
The victory marks another WTA 1000 final appearance for the 22-year-old, who previously finished runner-up in Miami earlier this season. It also ended a demanding stretch of three consecutive three-set matches, including a close battle against fellow American Iva Jovic.
Cirstea exits the tournament after one of her most notable runs, highlighted by a surprise win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier in the competition. Gauff, however, maintained her dominance over the Romanian, recording her third victory against her this season.
Speaking after the match, Gauff said she had grown from each of her tough encounters and expressed satisfaction at reaching another final in Rome, where she lost the title match last year.
She will now face Elina Svitolina, who advanced to the final after defeating world No. 3 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in a hard-fought semifinal.
Svitolina’s win was built on consistency and composure, especially in the deciding set, where she capitalized on Swiatek’s high error count despite the Polish star producing more winners overall. The Ukrainian also impressed earlier in the tournament with a strong quarterfinal win over second seed Elena Rybakina.
Now a two-time former champion in Rome, Svitolina returns to the final for the first time in several years, setting up an intriguing showdown with Gauff for the title.
