Coco Gauff put in a dominant performance to give team USA the lead in the United Cup final on Sunday, overcoming Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 in a hard-hitting match that lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes. Gauff, who had already beaten Swiatek earlier at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, extended her winning streak to seven matches, showing her confidence ahead of the Australian Open.
She displayed impressive form, including a match-clinching double fault from Swiatek at 4-5 in the second set, and later expressed her belief in being one of the best players when playing at her best.
Taylor Fritz then sealed the United Cup title for the U.S., defeating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7/4) in a tense, serve-dominated battle that ended with wild celebrations. The match featured 30 aces and only three break points, highlighting the narrow margins at play.
Fritz’s victory meant the United States won the mixed-teams cup for the second time in three years, following their triumph in 2023. Despite a strong showing from Poland, who had narrowly lost to Germany in the 2022 final, the U.S. managed to clinch the title.
Gauff, who went undefeated in singles at the tournament, highlighted her belief in her abilities, reflecting on her journey to the Australian Open with renewed confidence.
She enters the season’s first Grand Slam as the world number three, after claiming victories over top-ranked players like Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai, Karolina Muchova, and Swiatek. Her achievement at the United Cup only boosts her momentum as she heads into the new year.
Swiatek, who had been dealing with a left thigh injury throughout the week, took a medical timeout during the second set but could not recover from Gauff’s dominant display.
After the loss, Swiatek left the court in tears but returned to join in the trophy presentation, laughing and joking with her team. Despite her injury, she showed resilience and is expected to be a strong contender at the Australian Open.
