Gael Monfils, Mariano Navone Shine as National Bank Open Action Continues

Gael Monfils produced another memorable performance to advance at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, defeating Poland's Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-4 in a late-night first-round clash in Montreal.

The 39-year-old Frenchman claimed his first ATP Tour-level victory since Monte-Carlo in April, delighting spectators during what is his 15th and final appearance at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event.

Monfils added another milestone to his remarkable career by becoming the second-oldest player to win a main-draw match at the tournament. The fan favorite also improved his record in Montreal to 25 wins in the Open Era and extended his ATP Masters 1000 tally to 146 victories—the highest total by any player yet to capture a Masters 1000 singles title.

Elsewhere, Argentina's Mariano Navone celebrated a career milestone with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over Matteo Berrettini. The win gave Navone his 19th tour-level victory of the 2026 season, setting a new personal best after surpassing the 18-match totals he recorded in each of the previous two years.

He displayed impressive resilience by saving 11 of the 12 break points he faced and continued his strong run at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments by reaching the second round for the fourth time in his past five appearances.

Monday's schedule also featured successful starts for experienced campaigners Marin Cilic and Cameron Norrie as the ATP Masters 1000 tournament gathered momentum following weather disruptions earlier in the event. With several established stars and emerging talents progressing, the competition in Montreal is set for an exciting week of high-level tennis.
